JESUS’ SERVANTS: Acts 6:1-7

BIG IDEA

In Acts 6, we see the early church acting like servants rather than cynics. Cynics see a need and complain about it, whereas servants see a need and seek to meet it by God’s grace. The early church also served one another according to how they were gifted and talented in order to see the gospel advance. One of the reasons Christianity exploded throughout the Roman empire (and is still exploding today!) was because Christians are servants. They have always been at the forefront of helping the poor and vulnerable in the world. More than anything, each person in the world needs not to serve, but to be served by Jesus. Jesus is the Greater Servant who came to the earth in order to die for our sin. By serving us in his life and death, Jesus fixed our true problem—paying our debt to God so we can be totally forgiven and eternally accepted in Him. Are you a cynic or a servant? How are you gifted to serve? Will you serve to see the gospel advance? Are you being served by Jesus?

SCRIPTURE

ACTS 6:1-7 1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them. And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

MARK 10:42-45 42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

DISCUSSION

Start off by spend some time praying for one another. After that, pray for the lost to be saved by Jesus, praying for your city, and praying for Jesus to build His church in Checotah, Eufaula, and Muskogee.

1. Was there anything from the sermon or the big idea that stood out to you or challenged you? Was there anything new? Was there anything confusing?

2. What stands out to you in Acts 6:1-7 and Mark 10:42-45 and why?

“Cynics see a need and complain about it, whereas servants see a need and seek to meet it by God’s grace.”

3. What needs do you see in your church and in your city and how can you be a servant rather than a cynic? Try and be specific and think through a plan of action.

“More than anything, each person in the world needs not to serve, but to be served by Jesus.”

4. What does it mean to be served by Jesus? Do you see yourself as one who is in constant need of Jesus serving you? How does the fact that Jesus is the Greater Servant help strengthen you to serve your church and city? What are you planning to do in order to better serve your church and city?

GOOD WORD

Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve. He came to die! This means that the basic message of Christianity is not “serve Jesus!” The basic message of Christianity is “be served by Jesus, through trusting in who He is and what He’s done for you!” Joy to us, glory to Jesus.
