JESUS’ PROVIDENCE: Acts 8:26-40

BIG IDEA

In Acts 8, we learn a lot about the providence of God when it comes to our personal salvation. We learn that it doesn’t matter who you are because Jesus was somebody for you. It doesn’t matter how badly you’ve screwed up your life through your sin—in Jesus Christ there is redemption, forgiveness, and salvation. In addition, we learn that it doesn’t matter where you are because Jesus seeks and saves the lost. The gospel is not about good people finding God; the gospel is about a good God finding people no matter who they are or where they are. Why? Why is there such good news for people who deserve nothing but the just wrath and judgement of God because of their sin? The answer to that question is profound yet simple: because Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Our sin is so serious that Jesus had to die and His love is so fierce that He was willing to die. Lastly, we learn that it doesn’t matter where you’re going. If you’ve been saved by Jesus, you’ve been sent by Jesus to love people and tell them the gospel.

SCRIPTURE

ACTS 8:26-40 26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. 27 And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said,“How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this:

“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth. 33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.”

34 And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

DISCUSSION

1. Was there anything from the sermon or the big idea that stood out to you or challenged you? What questions do you have? What stands out to you in Acts 8:26-40 and why?

It doesn’t matter how badly you’ve screwed up your life through your sin—in Jesus Christ there is redemption, forgiveness, and salvation.

2. How does this distinguish Christianity from the major world religions? How have you seen this truth in your own life?

The gospel is not about good people finding God; the gospel is about a good God finding people no matter who they are or where they are.

3. Does this help make sense of your own conversion to Christianity? In your experience is this the message of most churches?

Our sin is so serious that Jesus had to die and His love is so fierce that He was willing to die.

4. How does this change the way we view our own sin? How does the world view what the Bible calls “sin”?

If you’ve been saved by Jesus, you’ve been sent by Jesus to love people and tell them the gospel.

5. Who are you currently praying for, inviting to Worship Gathering and Community Group, and seeking to tell the gospel to? Spend some time praying for Jesus to seek them and save them, asking Him to empower you to be a witness for Him.

GOOD WORD

Have you been SCORNED BY SOME CRACKPOT CHURCHES? That’s no problem for Jesus. The Ethiopian eunuch was likely turned away at the Temple because of his sin but Jesus came to him! Do you have DOUBTS? That’s no problem for Jesus. Thomas had doubts but Jesus came to him! Do you have TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE? That’s no problem for Jesus. Just like Philip, that’s why we preach and teach the Bible week in and week out—so you can understand. Do you HATE JESUS? That’s no problem for Jesus. So did Saul but Jesus came to him! Do you have GREAT SIN? That’s no problem for Jesus. So did the Ethiopian (so do we all!) but Jesus came to him!
