JESUS, MARRIAGE, AND DIVORCE: Mark 10:1-12

SCRIPTURE

Mark 10:1-12And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them.

And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

DISCUSSION

1. Study through Mark 10:1-12 together. Does anything stand out to you?

2. How has the world changed in the last 50 years with regard to relationships and divorce? What do you think lead to this?

3. We can learn at least five things marriage in this passage. What are they? How are each of these significant today, especially given the current discussion about what marriage is?

4. Why is marriage such a big deal? (see Ephesians 5:22, 25, & 32

5. Why is divorce such a big deal?

GOOD WORD

No matter who you are (married or single) or what you’ve done (adulterer or divorced), in Christ you have the perfect spouse. If your faith is in Him, Jesus looks at you and says, “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also” (John 14:2-3).
