JESUS’ FELLOWSHIP: Acts 6:8-15

posted in: Sermons | 0

BIG IDEA

In Acts 6 we see how Stephen’s encounter with his contemporaries helps us discover what it looks like for a Christian to have fellowship with Jesus in their everyday life. Christians have fellowship through Jesus’ WORKS because He continues to love and serve the world through us. Believers also have fellowship through His WORDS because Jesus continues to speak to the world through the church. Again, we have fellowship through His SUFFERING because Christians share in the suffering of Jesus, which is a blessing because it makes us more like and reliant on God. Finally, Christians have fellowship in Jesus’ JOY because Jesus has finished the work of salvation for us. We know that our bad things will turn out for good, our good things can never be lost, and the best things are yet to come.

SCRIPTURE

ACTS 6:8-15 8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. 9 Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen. 10 But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.11 Then they secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council, 13 and they set up false witnesses who said, “This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law, 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.” 15 And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

DISCUSSION

Start off by spend some time praying for one another. After that, pray for the lost to be saved by Jesus, praying for your city, and praying for Jesus to build His church in Checotah, Eufaula, and Muskogee. 1. Was there anything from the sermon or the big idea that stood out to you or challenged you? Was there anything new? Was there anything confusing? 2. What stands out to you in Acts 6:8-15 and why?

Christians have fellowship through Jesus’ WORKS because He continues to love and serve the world through us. Believers also have fellowship through His WORDS because Jesus continues to speak to the world through the church.

3. Which comes most naturally for you, fellowship in Jesus’ WORKS or WORDS? Why is it necessary to both love and serve people and tell them the gospel?

Again, we have fellowship through His SUFFERING because Christians share in the suffering of Jesus, which is a blessing because it makes us more like and reliant on God.

4. How does the Christian view of suffering differ from other religions and philosophies of the world? How can suffering make us more like Jesus? Have

you seen this in your own life? How can suffering make us more reliant on God? Have you seen this in your own life?

Christians have fellowship in Jesus’ JOY because Jesus has finished the work of salvation for us. We know that our bad things will turn out for good, our good things can never be lost, and the best things are yet to come.

4. How is our joy in Jesus the anchor of everything else in the Christian life (works, words, and suffering)? Try and be specific, and speak from your own experience if possible.

GOOD WORD

When Jesus is your joy—your true joy—He can’t be taken away. You will live a life full of good works, tell people the gospel, and you will suffer well knowing that in Jesus, “Our bad things turn out for good, our good things will never be lost, and the best things are yet to come” (Tim Keller).   JOHN 16:22 “So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”
