HOW TO HAVE INTIMACY WITH GOD: Mark 6:45-52

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

SCRIPTURE

Mark 6:45-52 45 Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray. 47 And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48 And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, 50 for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” 51 And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, 52 for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

DISCUSSION

1. Study through Mark 6:45-52 together. What stands out to you and why?

In his book titled Prayer, Tim Keller writes, “Jesus Christ taught his disciples to pray, healed people with prayers, denounced the corruption of the temple worship (which, he said, should be a ‘house of prayer’), and insisted that some demons could be cast out only through prayer. He prayed often and regularly with fervent cries and tears (Heb. 5:7), and sometimes all night. The Holy Spirit came upon him and anointed him as he was praying (Luke 3:21–22), and he was transfigured with the divine glory as he prayed (Luke 9:29). When he faced his greatest crisis, he did so with prayer. We hear him praying for his disciples and the church on the night before he died (John 17:1–26) and then petitioning God in agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. Finally, he died praying.”

2. Which of these ways Jesus prayed most stands out to you and why? How does this help us see how important prayer is and how integrated it should be in our lives?

3. What things or ideas have choked out your prayer life? What things or ideas have helped cultivate a healthy prayer life?

4. Read back through the passage and point out all of the ways Jesus initiates and goes after His disciples. Which one most stands out to you and why?

5. What is the significance of what Jesus says to His disciples in verse 50?

6. What is the cost of us having true intimacy with God and why did it have to be paid? (see Isaiah 59:1-2 for some help)

GOOD WORD

Because the Son of God came down the mountain and forfeited His intimacy on the cross, we can have peace and intimacy with God.
